Calculating fabric requirements for making curtains
You are welcome to download and print the following PDF charts free of charge - click on the link above each chart to take you to a version that you can download and print.
I designed the charts initially, to help my Adult Education students calculate fabric requirements for their chosen curtain making projects.
I have tried to keep the methods of calculation as succinct as possible whilst maintaining a professional end result. They show exactly how I work out the fabric requirements for my clients when I make bespoke soft furnishings.
The centre column of each chart gives the method, or instructions, for the calculations; the left hand column shows a working example; the right hand column is for you, to write down your own calculations.
The first chart is for calculating the fabric requirements for lined or interlined curtains with a purchased pencil pleat heading. The calculations are for plain fabrics only, or those without a pattern repeat, ie. vertical stripes, small gingham checks or small random polka dots.

The next chart shows how to work out the extra fabric you might need to purchase if you choose to make your curtains in a fabric with a repeat pattern.

I always use the following chart when making each pair of curtains. It is completed, according to all the calculations in the previous charts, and then pinned to my notice board above my worktable. I can then refer to it when cutting out all the fabric drops and making up the curtains.
